Variously attributed to John Hamilton Belhaven, Andrew Fletcher, and George Ridpath. Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun / by W.C. Mackenzie, Edinburgh, 1935, pages 314-323, attributes the work to John Hamilton Belhaven.

The first issue was printed in Edinburgh as a quarto under title: A defence of the Scots settlement at Darien. With an answer to the Spanish memorial against it. And arguments to prove that it is the interest of England, and join with the Scots to protect it. To which is added, a description of the country, and a particular account of the Scots colony (Scott, 68). It was also printed in the same year in Edinburgh as an octavo in half sheets (Scott, 67) and an octavo in whole sheets with one rule or two rules above imprint on title page (Scott, 67a1 and Scott, 67a2).
