The author was born in Sweden and came to New York in 1880. Serving in the U.S. Army until 1891, Tidestrom then studied botany at the University of California with Edward Lee Greene. Tidestrom came to Washington with Greene to complete his PhD at Catholic University. Elysium marianum was his first major work for which he also acted as publisher, photographer and typesetter
