Notes

Engraved illustrations, originally drawn by Susanna and Anna Lister, reprinted for this edition from the original copperplates.

Engraved titles, half-titles, special title pages, etc. of original edition (dated1685-1692) are counted and numbered as plates. Additional 22 anatomical plates are in a separate sequence at end.

The four books and two appendices with title pages dated 1685-1692 consist entirely of engravings, each including from one to several figures and numbered up to 1059. In this sequence there is no plate numbered 89, 164, 195, 196, 222, 923, or 961, while there are three marked 101, and two each of those numbered 168, 512, 822, 846, 883, 931, 965, and 990.

The letterpress text (iv, 6, 7, [4], 12, 77 pages), which is new, includes: A preface by the editor, some Notes and Observations written by Lister on a set of proof plates of the first edition, the "Tabularum anatomicarum explicatio ex nova recensione editoris," and the two Indices.

The "Tabularum anatomicarum explicatio" (7 pages of letterpress, without title page) refers to the 22 separately numbered anatomical plates, of which plates 15, 16, and 18 are plates 195, 196, and 222 omitted in Liber 3 in the main sequence of engravings. Plate 2 of the anatomical plates is dated 1693.

The indexes have a separate dated title page: Duo indices ad Synopsin methodicam conchyliorum Martini Lister, M.D. quorum primus conchyliorum classes exhibet eo ipso ordine in quo disponuntur a Listero. Alter easdem complectitur juxta methodum celeberrimi Caroli a Linné, nec non ad tabulas Listerianas accomodatur.

Text mainly in Latin. English text on alternate pages in the second part of "Duo indices"; all text of the Notes and Observations by Lister (6 pages) in English.
