Notes

The field book documents Fielding Meek's participation in David Dale Owen's Survey, 1848-1849, which covered the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Begins with a table of observations organized by dates (May 30 - June 24) and listing time, temperature, WB(?), wind, clouds, course, and location. Journal entries describe terrain, vegetation, wildlife, rock strata, description of aftermath of a tornado (June 15th), daily activities, challenges of travel (adverse weather, river rapids), activities of survey participants, and interactions with local American Indians (Chippewa, Sioux), some of who assisted exploration efforts. Locations noted include vicinity of Sun Rise River, Saint Croix River, and Snake River. At the back of the field book are a list of provisions and formation descriptions.
