Notes

""Your voiceless lips, O flowers! are living preachers; Each cup a precept, every leaf a book. Supplying to my fancy numerous teachers From loneliest nook.""

The mansucript, presumably in the artist's hand, is comprised of two parts. The first section opens with an illustrated title page, dated 1860, with the title: The fête of the flowers, framed in part by lilies and roses. Following are eight handwritten pages of light verse about flowers, with each page of text flanked by a full-page watercolor of a floral bouquet depicting the flowers addressed in the accompanying poem. The verso of each page of text and each illustration is blank. The second section of the manuscript begins on page [33] with an illustrated title page with the title: "Blossoms and berries," followed by eight watercolors of various berries, wild roses, and deadly nightshade without any accompanying text. The verso of each watercolor illustration is blank.

Two blank leaves precede the title page and 2 blank leaves follow the final page of the manuscript, which is also blank.
