"The two shrews are restricted in distribution to the mountains of the Appalachian Mountains region and to the GaspeМЃ Peninsula and Maritime Provinces of Canada."

"The systematics and biology of the two shrews of the Sorex dispar group are described on the basis of a review of the literature and an examination of 247 museum specimens (224 Sorex dispar and 23 S. gaspensis). Sorex gaspensis is retained as a full species, and the species boundary between S.d. dispar and S.d. blitchi is shifted northward to the region of the Pennsylvania/Maryland/West Virginia borders.
