Types of materials in this collection are FAR-B's articles of incorporation, by-laws, memoranda of understanding, board member information, membership directories, newsletters, board of director and annual meeting minutes, correspondence, photographs, financial papers, and program records. Program records consist of include FAR-B sponsored activities such as international symposia on major scientific issues or topics of concern to agriculture, awards, fellowships, summer internships, field days, building dedications, special activities related to alliances and community education, BARC groups programs on Black History Month (February) Women's History Month (March), BARC Poster Session (April), "Take Your Child to Work Program" (April), Hispanic Heritage Month (October), and various laboratory reviews, etc. Prior to the establishment of FAR-B, some of the activities of the Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville are documented in the meeting minutes of the Governing Board Plant Industry Station Employees' Association (1955-1965). Historical photographs of Beltsville facilities dating from the 1940s are part of this collection. Visits of government officials to BARC are documented and some include: Congressman Steny Hoyer (April 15, 1983), Governor G. Aiken, and Senator Mathias. Secretary Earl Butz.
The Friends of Agricultural Research - Beltsville, Inc. (FAR-B) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting the research and educational programs at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Beltsville, Maryland. Begun in 1986 at a time when BARC and its programs needed additional outreach support, the new organization welcomed members associated with academics, industry, government, and individuals from the general public.
