"Some of our co-operators having expressed a desire to be freed from their connection with these illustrations, it is now proposed to conclude this series with the present number, but a new series will be continued, upon our own resources."--From a printed leaf bound in at the end of v. 3, captioned "Note" and signed "W.J.--P.I.S."
The new series (with plates marked "n.s."), sometimes referred to as v. 4 of this set, was issued in parts between 1836 [or 1837?] and 1843.
The text is unpaged.
Two engraved plates are included for each plate number, one being hand-colored and the other without coloring. There are a total of 308 numbered plates, arranged as follows: v. I, plates 1-55; v. 2, plates 56-110; vol. 3, plates 106-136, 139-151.
"Note to the binder: by mistake, there are five duplicate numbers ... viz. 106*, 107*, 108*, 109*, 110*; and numbers 137[dagger] and 138[dagger] are omitted"--P. [1] of the index to v. 3.
Plate 93 is incorrectly numbered as 94.
