Notes

Title devised by cataloger.

Additional material includes contemporary envelope with title which previously housed the drawings; correspondence between dealer (George Goodspeed of Goodspeed<U+2019>s Book Shop, Boston) and Dibner dated Nov. 1966, re: verification of handwriting on envelope, including photostats of letters in Mrs. Agassiz<U+2019>s hand.

In his letter to Dibner (1966 November 16) Goodspeed asserts his belief that the drawings are by Agassiz, though there is no firm evidence of this.

Lectures originally published in newspapers The American traveller and The daily evening traveller (Boston, December 19, 1848 through January 24, 1849); published in book form as Twelve lectures on comparative embryology (Boston, 1849). The illustrations accompanying the published lectures are comparable to these drawings in style and grouping.

Ten drawings (2 bifolia, 6 loose sheets) in ink and watercolor illustrating Agassiz<U+2019>s lectures on comparative embryology, delivered before the Lowell Institute in Boston, 1848-49.
