The presence of certain petroleum derivatives throughout the extracellular tracheal system of living mosquito larvae was observed by exposing them to fluorescein-labelled materials. These hydrocarbons continued to enter such larvae when the tracheal trunks, were collapsed. Numerous specimens were able to complete development to adults after hexadecane was present throughout the respiratory system.
