Abstract

The taxonPetropedetesnewtoniiwas described in 1895 by Bocage, from Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea). This taxon, whose holotype is lost, has been misidentified since Boulenger’s revision of the genus in 1900 and its relationships with other taxa (P.vulpiaeandP.johnstoni) is confusing. Currently,P.newtoniiis considered a synonym ofP.johnstoni. In this work, by revising morphological characters of non-webbedPetropedetesof Bioko, we demonstrate the morphological singularity of these specimens with respect toP.johnstoniandP.vulpiaeand their association with the namePetropedetesnewtonii. Consequently, we provide the subsequent designation of a neotype ofP.newtoniiand revalidate this species from its synonym withP.johnstoni.
