Abstract

A synopsis of the generaColeusLour,EquilabiumA.J.Paton, Mwany. & Culham andPlectranthusL’Hér. (Lamiaceae, Tribe Ocimeae, Subtribe Plecranthinae) is presented. Generic delimitation follows a recently published molecular phylogeny which identifiedColeusas the sister of the remaining genera of Subtribe Plectranthinae;Plectranthusas sister toTetradeniaBenth. andThorncroftiaN.E.Br., and a separate phylogenetically distinct genusEquilabiumcomprising species previously placed inPlectranthus. In this treatment, 294 species ofColeus, 42 ofEquilabium, and 72 ofPlectranthusare recognized. All but one of the combinations inEquilabiumare new as only the genus and type species have been previously published. Two-hundred and twelve names are changed to combinations inColeusfromPlectranthus,PycnostachysHook. andAnisochilusBenth.
