FAQ

Title

Flora Australasica ; or, A selection of handsome, or curious plants, natives of New Holland, and the South Sea Islands : containing coloured figures and descriptions of some of the choicest species most proper for the conservatory or greenhouse, and many of which will endure the cold of our climate, in the open air, with a very little protection ; with magnified dissections of their most essential parts, their names, descriptions, & a full account of the best method of cultivation and propagation. The greater part are handsome evergreen shrubs, and may produce sweet-scented flowers ; and as they are generally of free growth, and easily managed, they may be considered as the most desirable plants for cultivation. Notes

Plates hand-colored.

"[T]he first edition ... appears to exist in two issues, one with plates on regular paper and one with plates on china paper. The coloring of the plates is noticeably different between the two issues in the copies at [Holden Arboretum]. The plates are ... all probably engraved by S. Watts, although only the first plate is so signed. The plates bear publication dates between June 1827 and June 1828, with the last four plates undated."--S.H. Johnston, Cleveland herbal. In the Brown University, John Hay Library copy, the plates, on regular paper, are all dated, the latest being July 1, 1828, and all are signed "E.D. Smith del. / S. Watts sc."; this presumably represents the final state of all plates.

Collation: [A]² B-P⁴ [$2 signed]; 58 leaves, pages unnumbered + plates 1-56.
