The plates and maps have various illustrators and engravers. Some of the illustrators include: Charlotte Murchison; Mrs. Traherne; Lady Ht. Clive; Mr. R.W. Evans; Ince; Mrs. Phillips; T. Webster; J.W. Salter; J.W. Whymper; and Frances Stackhouse Acton. The maps were engraved by J. Gardner. Lithographers include: A. Picken; G. Scharf; and Day & Haghe. Some plates were printed by C. Hullmandel.

Paged continuously. Volume 1: xxxii, 576 pages, [16] unnumbered leaves of plates; volume 2: [5], 580-768 pages, plates numbered 1-27, 29-37 and 2 bis, 7 bis, 15 bis, and 16 bis. Plate number 28 was apparently not issued.

List of subscribers: volume 1, pages [vii]-xii.

The slipcase contains an engraved and hand-colored map made up of three separate linen-backed folded panels. Each panel unfolds to 94 x 51 cm.

A printed errata slip is pasted in volume 1 (page [xxvi]), beginning: "N.B. Although the words 'Caradoc sandstone' are prefixed ...."
